ED 562 - COMPUTER ART & DESKTOP PUBLISHING
INTEGRATION OF TECHNOLOGY

ED 562  Computer Art & Desktop Publishing

Course Description - This online course introduces participants to the methods for creating, editing, and integrating computer graphics and/or digital images into the K-12 curriculum. No prior art experience is required. This curriculum is based on a PC platform. Syllabus

Pre-requisites - Participants should be familiar with basic computer operations, including the use of Microsoft® Word and PowerPoint. In addition, each participant must obtain a user name and password for his/her SHU Network Account prior to participating in this course.

Technology Requirements - Participants must have access to the Internet along with administrator privileges on a personal computer  (PC) where they can download and install software. Microsoft Office 2000 or higher is also required (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Computers purchased prior to the year 2002 and/or Windows 98 are not recommended. Participants who use MACs are responsible for ensuring that the course instructor can view all submitted assignment files on a PC. Assignments created on a MAC that cannot be opened / viewed by the course instructor will be awarded a grade of zero. Dial-up Internet access is acceptable. However, users will experience longer wait times when accessing / uploading / downloading Internet materials. A digital camera or ability to obtain original digital images is also required.

Software Requirements - You must purchase / or have access to MS Publisher version 2002 or higher AND Corel/Ulead PhotoImpact version 12 or higher.  These software products replace a required textbook. If you cannot afford to purchase MS Publisher, you can use it free of charge in one of the SHU computer labs. Free trials of Publisher are not available online. Note – You will download and install additional software from the Internet to your home computer. This additional software is available via free trials and/or demos.

Sample Assignment - Use PhotoImpact and MS PowerPoint to plan instruction / create instructional materials for students in one grade (K-12). Design an original tutorial lesson that demonstrates how to use a specific software program to create or do something. The tutorial must also include an integrated classroom assignment. Tutorials showing how to use MS Publisher, PhotoImpact, PhotoShop or Blackboard are recommended. However, tutorials demonstrating how to use other programs such as Excel, PowerPoint, etc. are also acceptable. [Sample Tutorial - TBA]

Reflection Paper - Reflect on what you have learned in this course. Review the Connecticut Common Core of Teaching: Foundation Skills and Competencies (CCCT), the Connecticut Teacher Technology Competencies (CTTC), and the Connecticut Student Technology Competencies (CSTC). Compose a 500-1000 word reflection paper that discusses the relationship between the teaching and student competencies and what you have learned through this course. Be sure to mention the title of the competencies by name and also mention the exact competency or skill that you are referring to by name and number. Provide recommendations and explain how this course has influenced your decisions for or against the the use of computer art and desktop publishing in your classroom. Sample Reflection Paper
