ED 578 - INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS
TECHNOLOGY FOUNDATIONS

ED 578  Introduction to Computers in Education

Course DescriptionThis course will familiarize participants with the methods for using computer technology to support teaching and learning in the K-12 curriculum. A variety of software programs will be used as a resource for managing classroom administrative tasks and enhancing professional productivity. Participants will acquire basic strategies for evaluating and incorporating online sources of information into the curriculum. Syllabus

Pre-requisites - Participants should be familiar with basic computer operations, including the use of Microsoft® Word. In addition, each participant must obtain a user name and password for his/her SHU Network Account prior to participating in this course.

Technology Requirements - A PC with Microsoft® Office 2000 or higher, a CDRW drive, and Internet access.

Sample Assignment - Develop a lesson plan that demonstrates the seamless integration of technology into the curriculum and aligns with the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) K-12 Curricular Framework, the CSDE Computer Competency Standards for Students, and the International Society for Technology Education (ISTE) "NETS" standards. Field Experience
- Participants will interview a teacher, curriculum coordinator, computer coordinator, librarian, special education teacher or paraprofessional. The purpose of the interview will be to develop an awareness of how technology encompasses the concepts of networks, roles, resources, and emerging technologies. In addition, the use of technology for enabling and empowering learners with diverse cultures, characteristics, abilities and socio-economic backgrounds will be investigated.  A minimum of 3 hours will be required for conducting a background search of the school site/school district and composing a reflection paper.  Sample Reflection Paper

Teaching Dispositions - In addition to measuring content knowledge and technological skills, several ED 578 course assignments include embedded assessments that measure an individual's teaching dispositions. See Overview
