COMMUNICATIONS ACROSS THE CURRICULUM

READER-RESPONSE WRITING
Sometimes students need to be reminded that they bring attitudes to the subject under study that might affect the possibility of “receptivity.” To emphasize this point: have students divide a sheet of paper with a vertical line down the center. On one side of the paper they can write as a heading (The author's) prejudices (or preconceptions); on the other side, My Prejudices (or preconceptions). Listing the biases of the author forces students to think critically about what they have read. Noting their own prejudices should help them to discover what point of view influenced their response to the material.
