COMMUNICATIONS ACROSS THE CURRICULUM

CXC MISSION STATEMENT

Communications Across the Curriculum (CXC) at Sacred Heart University is an interdisciplinary program dedicated to promoting literacy and learning by fostering critical thinking and integrating oral, written, and electronic communication skills across the university-wide curriculum. In this increasingly complex and technological world, it is important for students to understand that they will be expected to solve problems and formulate ideas as well as articulate concepts in a clear and coherent manner. University courses provide the venue to hone these crucial communication skills. Communications Across the Curriculum seeks to involve as many professors and students as possible in making oral, written, and electronic communications a major tool for exploring ideas, providing focus, and deepening understanding. Our philosophy is to support the work of professors who are fostering these communication skills through mentoring, consulting, incentive programs, and student prizes that recognize and reward excellence in written and oral communication. CXC also recognizes the importance of communications in the professions. To this end, it will support faculty in developing discipline-specific assignments that nurture communication skills in their areas. Workshops will provide members of the faculty with the tools to integrate CXC into their courses. A web page open to all members of the university faculty will describe current CxC projects and provide materials to interested professors. Through the university-wide implementation of CXC, Sacred Heart University hopes to encourage an academic atmosphere that enhances learning through excellence in communication.
