SCHOLARSHIPS 101

"All they need to do is write a brief essay, list community involvement, and they get money!  WE HAVE SCHOLARSHIPS WE CAN’T GIVE AWAY . . . because kids won't write the essay."
-Quote
from an alumni scholarship fund office

Perhaps it's not that simple, but there is scholarship money out there that goes unused.

Full-time Undergraduate
First: Check the home town stuff, such as churches, civic organizations, major industries and corporations, your parents' place of employment (even if not current), the Knights of Columbus, and local golf and country clubs.

Outside Scholarships
The best place to look, with the most complete listings, is www.Fastweb.com. They will not only tell you about searching for scholarships, but also provide scholarship applications, renewal information, essays, scams to avoid,  and tax information. Another good place to look for “Scholarship Hunting Tips” is www.financialaidnews.com.

(We think you are getting the picture . . . scholarship search takes work!)

The staff here in the Office of Student Financial Assistance receive notification of some outside scholarships which we post in several places for your perusal.

Be Sure to Check:

  • Our bulletin board outside the Office of Student Financial Assistance in Curtis Hall
  • Your Outlook "Public Folders" under all public folders
  • Channel 6, your "in-house" TV station
  • There are also books that you can plow through in the library and in the Office of Student Financial Assistance.

Some of the best "Outside" scholarships that you may want to look into include:

  • CAPFAA (apps. now thru 4/1)
  • USA Funds
  • Datatel
  • Capitol Scholarship (for CT students)
  • Sallie Mae
  • Greater Bridgeport Area Foundation
  • CSLF, Vincent Maiocco
  • Jack Welch
  • Various Hispanic scholarships including Wal-Mart
  • "Caddie" scholarships from golf clubs
  • "University Women's Club" scholarships from local towns
  • Seeds of the Future "SOF Foundation", based on need
  • National Italian American Foundation "NIAF", "Polish Heritage Scholarship", and "Swiss Scholarship"
  • Various health care, minority, Navy nursing, ROTC and Special Education scholarships

All "Wiz Kids" Take Note:
"Endowed Scholarship" applications for those who have maintained a 3.5 cum GPA are available end of March/April for the following academic year. You will be notified by e-mail. Scholarships average about $1,000. Many students miss out on this opportunity simply because they don’t read their SHU e-mails!

For more specific information on University, State, and Federal Scholarships, we suggest that you visit the February 2008 E-News article, How to Pay for All This.

You will also find scholarship information for graduate and part-time undergraduate students.  And, of course, you are always welcome to come into the Office of Student Financial Assistance to talk with us.

Good Luck in your search and please let us know about any hits . . . don’t keep the good news to yourselves . . . it might help others!
