SACRED HEART UNIVERSITY TO OFFER CONFERENCE ON THE ISSUES OF AGING

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – On April 12, the College of Education and Health Professions at Sacred Heart University will present “Successful Aging,” a forum for seniors, their families and care givers addressing the critical issues of growing older in American society.

The conference will be held at SHU’s Cambridge Building, located at 7 Cambridge Drive in Trumbull, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Successful Aging will feature several aging specialists, exhibitors and representatives of community agencies presenting on various topics, including healthy living, nutrition and exercise.

Breakout sessions at the conference will include:

  • Ameriprise financial advisor Mary Ann Bunting and Carl Dunn, executive director of Sunrise Senior Living of Wilton speaking about retirement and estate planning, life and long-term care insurance, positive opportunities in the assisted living industry and recognition of seniors as a dynamic force in our society.
  • Bridgeport lawyer Ellen Morgan discussing legal issues such as guardianship, power of attorney, and preparation of standard and living wills.
  • SHU professor Michele Suhie introducing the concept of nontraditional retirement.
  • SHU professors Michelle Lusardi and Salome Brooks — assisted by graduate students in the physical therapy program — exploring strategies to improve balance and reduce the risk of falling.
  • SHU professor Margo Gross discussing longevity through nutrition, exercise, sleep and meaningful occupation.
  • SHU professor Wendy Bjerke speaking about the benefits of regular exercise for older individuals.
