Our names are Laura Walker and Katherine Pompelio and we are the captains of the Women’s Rugby Club at Sacred Heart. Though we are not a varsity sport, we still take our club seriously. We do have a great time though while playing one of the most interesting and fun to learn sports. We have two seasons: game season which is in the Fall, and tournament season in the Spring. The best reason to join rugby is: NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. Our team consists of girls who have played all different sports growing up, which has been very beneficial for our team.
Rugby is a full contact sport which may look rough, but once you’re in the game all you feel is your energy and adrenaline pumping.
In the Fall and Spring, our practices are Tuesday- Friday afternoons. Fall starts at the end of August to the end of October. Spring starts in February to the end of April. Some of the other colleges we usually play are New Paltz, Stony Brook, Bard, Fairfield, Drew, and Marist.
Women’s rugby started about 10 years ago, and has been growing since. This year, our team is fairly new consisting of mostly sophomores and freshmen. We have around 30 girls on our team. There are two captains and an executive board including a president, secretary, treasurer, and fundraising chair. Being that no experience is necessary to play, new people are always welcomed, and we are always learning from each other. Our team was formed on the basis of sisterhood and teamwork. We work as a team of friends.
To give you an idea of what this Spring Season entails for us:
