Welcome to the Queens of Heart Women’s Rugby page!
Our club was established here at Sacred Heart University in 1995 to form sisterhood and camaraderie through the game of rugby.
Though we are not a varsity sport, we still take our club seriously. We work hard and have a great time while playing and learning an interesting sport that is one of the most popular in the world, although it’s not very known here in the USA. Don’t worry if you’ve never heard of or seen rugby- there is NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! Our team consists of girls who have played all different sports- this diversity ends up being very beneficial on the field. Rugby is a full contact sport that may look rough, but can be very graceful and exciting once you learn the game. We play two seasons; league season is during fall semester and tournament season is in the spring.
During the fall we compete against teams in our division in the MET Union- these teams are all in the Tristate area. This Fall ‘09 we are returning to league play after an undefeated regular season last year, followed by a sudden death, triple-overtime win to beat Fairfield in the semifinals and a heartbreaking loss in the last seconds of the game to Hofstra in the championship. We’ll be facing both of those tough teams, along with playing Molloy and Drew Colleges at home and SUNY Purchase and Bard College away. It promises to be an exciting, competitive season!
Since no experience is necessary, potential players are always welcome! A strong point of rugby is that it requires a large number of players (15 on the field at once)- so on our team there is always someone willing to help out with explanations or any questions you may have! Above all, win or lose, during practice and games, we play hard and we work hard together as a team.
If rugby sounds like sport for you, feel free to contact us!
