Game Notes:

10-12-08 vs. Yale

Sacred Heart University’s Club Baseball team returned to Connecticut this past Sunday from their trip to Northeastern University and their first ever appearance in the NECBA showcase tournament. The Pioneers were 1-1 on the trip and hoped to improve on their record in their game Sunday against Yale. After the two teams met the day before it seemed now as though the players had switched uniforms. This time it was Yale who took advantage of mistakes scoring 10 runs off of Pioneer pitching. The defense once again struggled but a few good things came out of the loss. The Pioneers found a possible spot starter in Kevin Cooper (0-1) who filled in for the Pio’s with a strong pitching debut despite the 10-0 defeat. It is possible that the loss can be attributed to the hangover from the long road trip less than 24 hours before; however, SHU offers no excuses. A loss like this is disappointing no matter the circumstances but this group is strong and should rebound nicely. SHU now stands at (6-3) and is currently in second place, one game back of UCONN (8-3), in the NECBA fall standings. With only a few games to play, the Pioneers will need strong performances this weekend as they take on rival Fairfield in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader as well as the first place Huskies on Sunday.

Showcase Game 2 vs. Northeastern 10-11-08

After an impressive victory against Yale the Pioneers had their eyes set on defeating a new opponent. However, the team from Northeastern University had other plans. With undefeated pitcher Alex Walter taking the hill the Pioneer confidence was through the roof. Unfortunately for SHU, Walters’ efforts would not be enough. The junior starter pitched his third complete game of the young season and pitched well allowing seven hits and one Homerun. It was not the Pioneer pitching as much as it was the defense which let the game slip away. The usually sure-handed team recorded seven total errors, a season high, in just their second loss of the year. The Pioneers record now goes to (6-2) as they travel back home to play their next game versus Yale on Sunday.

Showcase Game 1 vs. Yale 10-11-08

This past Saturday the Pioneer Men traveled to Northeastern University to play in the NECBA showcase tournament. The first game matched SHU (5-1) against a then (3-4) Yale team. For the teams opening game coach Sean Heffron sent a new battery tandem into the spotlight. Pitcher Clay Caron and Catcher Mike Gordon, both freshmen, accepted the task and shined. Caron, who leads the Pioneers with a 0.00 ERA, pitched a complete game shutout allowing just four hits over seven innings. As for Gordon, the defensive statistics speak for themselves. In his first start the young catcher threw out three runners including the games’ final out at third base. When asked about the performance of the young battery, Coach Heffron was understandably overjoyed. “You can’t ask for anything more” said Heffron of the tandem, “Both guys played great.” The Pioneers also had a nice day offensively thanks to strong at bats from Matt Musico and Mike Visone. Sophomore Outfielder Sean Murphy’s First career homerun headlined the SHU onslaught as they went on to score seven runs against the Yale staff. The Pioneers improved their record to 6-1 as they awaited their next opponent.

10/4 @ Fairfield

Starting Pitcher Alex Walter went for his second win of the year as the Pioneers took on Fairfield University in another rivalry matchup. Fairfield began the game scoring four runs in the first inning. However, the Pioneers would battle back scoring two runs on an RBI double by Sean Murphy and an RBI groundout from Mike Smith. The Stags would take one of the runs back in the bottom half of the frame making the score 5 to 2.  SHU scored again in the 5th after 1st baseman Matt Musico reached on an error, made his way to third base and scored on a Kevin Cooper sac fly. With starting pitcher Alex Walter in a groove and poised to make a run at his second complete game in as many tries, the Pioneers were ready to make their move. The magic happened in the top of seventh inning, when Dave Domkowski walked and stole second. Matt Musico followed with a single moving Domkowski to third, bringing Adam Melanson to the plate. Melanson brought in a run with an RBI groundout cutting the deficit to 5-3. After Kevin Cooper was hit by a pitch Sophomore Jeff Daley came to the plate and placed the exclamation point on the SHU comeback. Daley slammed the Fairfield pitchers offering out of the park, on to a rooftop of a building just over the Left Centerfield fence. Alex Walter proceeded to close out the game in the bottom of the seventh getting the Stags to go down in order. Sacred Heart is now 5-1 and in first place in the NECBA southern division.

SHU Club Baseball              FINAL SCORE               SHU-5   UCONN-3

Game Summary

Sacred Heart Club Baseball won their first game of the year in their first opportunity this past Saturday, defeating UConn by a score of 5-3. The Pioneers jumped out to an early first inning lead thanks to a leadoff double by left fielder Sean Murphy, eventually scoring on an error by the Connecticut catcher. First baseman Matt Musico also scored on a UConn mistake after he had walked and stole second base. UConn made it closer in the bottom of the second after a solo homerun but the Pioneers and winning pitcher Adam Melanson were able to stop the bleeding. The game remained a close battle until with one out in the top of the fourth Centerfielder Kevin Cooper blasted his first homerun of the year. However Sacred Heart was not done scoring. The game was highlighted by the tremendous execution of designated hitter Dave Domkowski, shortstop Mike Smith and second baseman Darren Burke. With a man on first and one out, Domkowski reached safely on a bunt single. Smith followed with a bunt of his own, loading the bases. After an RBI walk by Sean Murphy, Darren Burke executed a perfect squeeze play reaching first base safely and allowing the streaking Domkowski to score from third. UConn would score two more runs in the bottom of the fifth taking the score to 5-3. Reliever Mike Visone came on to record the save and pitch a fairly easy seventh inning, allowing one walk and no hits. The Pioneers bring their record to 1-0 and await the season debut of pitcher Alex Walter.
