My name is Alex Walter and I am the President of the Club Baseball Team here at Sacred Heart University. Our Vice President, Brian Fitzsimmons, and I started the club team in the Spring of 2007. We were approved with a month left of school in 2007 and were still able to practice and schedule two games against Fairfield University. That schedule has blossomed to about 18 games for the Spring 2008 season. We play competitively with other club teams from schools such as the University of Connecticut, Hofstra, and New York University. This coming Fall we are joining the NECBA (New England Club Baseball Association) which will again be competitive and fun.  A long term goal of the club is to join the NCBA (National Cub Baseball Association).

When we started this club team Brian and I had both been cut from the Varsity team here at Sacred Heart. We wanted to start this team to give everyone that opportunity to continue to play baseball at a competitive level. We wanted to make sure that no one would be discouraged from to continuing to play baseball in college. This team has been able to fill its roster with players who are incredibly talented and dedicated—mostly high school ballplayers who didn’t want the demanding schedule of Division I baseball.

As far as requirements, attendance at practice and meetings is required with consideration for individual class schedules.  We try to schedule practice around the class schedule so that everyone receives an equal opportunity to practice. We will be having games during the spring, usually on the weekends, therefore it is relatively easy for members to maintain a balance between school and baseball.   

I encourage all interested players to come check us out at a practice or a game and see what we are about. We want to continue to make ourselves better every year and make sure that when we play in our leagues that we are team to be reckoned with.

Update: We finished the Spring with a record of 9 – 4. We hope to see you in the fall.
