Q: What public access for computing is available to students? Examples include computing labs, cyber cafés, residence hall computers, and wireless access.
A: Sacred Heart University students and faculty have the capability of connecting to the university's wireless network via their university issued laptops. The network infrastructure allows the creation of a variety of publicly accessible workspaces based on the users need. The University's residence halls have been configured with wired and wireless technologies to ensure the technology is available without physical restrictions.
Within our classroom environment there are 6 main computer labs and several mini labs to facilitate instruction. All classrooms on our main campus are equipped with wireless technology and our satellite locations have high speed connectivity. The university also provides 24/7/365 access to our public computer lab for all current constituents. The University's library has been outfitted with several publicly accessible workstations that are for patrons only.
Q: Does the campus provide institutional e-mail accounts for all students and use e-mail as an official medium of communication?
A: Email is the official means of communication at Sacred Heart University. Students are provided with 250 megabytes of disk space for email usage. To counter the high volume of spam traffic the university has implemented an anti-spam solution to filter and significantly minimize the spam traffic on campus. Students are provided with the necessary assistance to customize the spam filters to meet their needs. Registered students simply activate their accounts to begin usage.
Q: Does the campus provide and support electronic space for personal student Web pages?
A: The University provides the mechanism for students to develop and host their personal web pages by utilizing two solutions. The first solution is provided via our course management system. Students simply develop a personalized web presence and post the resulting website within the Blackboard portal. The second solution involves the utilization of a dedicated web server for all Sacred Heart students. Students that are interested in developing websites, but lack the expertise are encouraged to participate in the training department's monthly web development program to gain the necessary skills to create a personal website.
Q: Is contact information for students, faculty, and staff readily accessible electronically?
A: The University provides access to faculty and staff information via the web, specifically through the University's online phonebook and can be found at phonebook.sacredheart.edu. Student information is not available electronically to ensure that privacy guidelines are maintained. Students' directory is available in our Global Address List which only lists their email address.
Q: What social activities and services are available online?
A: The entry point to the student activity calendar is http://calendar.sacredheart.edu/, which lists all activities online and is fully searchable. Meal plan applications and registration can be completed via the web, and sports events can be tracked via http://sacredheartpioneers.com/ .
Q: Are there Web sites for student organizations and clubs?
A: The University has a web page for all clubs and organizations along with other student activities and programs available. It is listed on the home page under "Student Life." In addition, we have an organizational portal for them to hold chat, forums and share information.
Q: Does the campus make available online discussion forums or bulletin boards for un-moderated use?
A: Online discussion forums are available through Blackboard, and Microsoft Outlook Bulletin Boards are available to all internal users through use of the Microsoft Outlook software client.
Within our Blackboard environment we have deployed several electronic student managed organizations to facilitate increased communication amongst the various enrolled members. There are several un-moderated online discussion boards available for student use. Examples of the discussion forums range from Athletics to program of study and majors.
Q: What technology-supported career-planning services are available for students?
A: Career Development offers an interactive website through the SHU website. Erecruiting, a career management online system is available to all students, alumni and employers. The Strong Interest Inventory and the Myers-Briggs Assessments are administered and interpreted online through CPP Inc.
