Last season, Dungy became the first black head coach to win a Super Bowl, as his Indianapolis Colts defeated the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI. During his tenure with the Colts, Dungy has also led the Colts to five playoff appearances, four AFC South titles, and two AFC Championship appearances.
Dungy has long been active in many community service organizations in the cities in which he has coached, beginning as a public speaker for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Athletes in Action. He launched Mentors for Life, a program that provided football tickets to youth and mentors. He has supported children’s charitable programs such as Family First, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Boys and Girls Clubs, and foster parenting organizations.
In August 2007, President George W. Bush appointed Dungy a member of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation. The 25-member council represents leaders from government, business, entertainment, athletics and non-profit organizations committed to growing the spirit of service and civic participation. |
