5 V. 5 BASKETBALL RULES

Players:

  • Minimum of four (4) players to start the game.
  • Team members must be listed on the team roster.
  • Rosters are final at the completion of regular season.
  • Participants may only play on one team.
  • Current Sacred Heart men’s and women’s basketball players are ineligible to play.

Length of Game:

  • Two (2) fifteen-minute halves and one (1) two-minute halftime.
  • Running clock for the first 28-minutes of play.  The clock will stop in the last two minutes of the second half for dead ball situations.
  • Teams get two (2) one-minute timeouts (clock will stop).
  • All jump balls, after the first tip of the game, will be determined by using an alternating possession arrow.

Mercy Rule: After ten minutes into the second half if one team is ahead by 30 or more points, the game can end at the official's discretion.

Overtime:

  • Overtime is three-minutes.
  • The clock will stop for dead ball situations.
  • Each team will be allowed one additional timeout.
  • All fouls carry over from the second period.
  • If tied after three minutes, game becomes sudden death.

Scorekeeping:

Each team must be prepared to provide a scorekeeper throughout the game.  This person(s) will split the duties with the other team’s scorekeeper(s) to keep one score sheet (see attached).  It’s recommended that this person not be a player in the game, but players on the bench may be deemed as scorekeeper.  Having a scorekeeper from each team will ensure fairness.

Forfeiting/Playoffs:

After one (1) forfeit (or not attending the captains meeting) a team will lose its $10 forfeit fee.  After forfeiting two (2) games or cancelling three (3) times, teams are ineligible to make the playoffs.  Teams must average a 3.0 or better in the regular season to be eligible for playoffs and maintain at least a 3 rating in each playoff game to continue to the next round.

Team Shirts:

It would be helpful if: team members wear common colored shirts; numbered jerseys; team listed first on the schedule wears white (home team) and the second team listed wears a dark shirt (away).

Fouls:

  • 7th team foul = 1 and 1
  • 10th team foul = two free throws
  • All shooting fouls with a missed basket will result in two free throws.
  • All shooting fouls with a made basket will result in a made basket and one free throw.
  • Restrictions end on the release of ball.

Flagrant, Intentional, and Technical Fouls:

  • Three flagrant, intentional or technical fouls results in a forfeit.
  • All flagrant, intentional and technical fouls will result in two foul shots by any player on the opposing team that is currently on the court; plus possession of the ball at half court.
  • If a player receives two (2) technical fouls (or 1 flagrant) he/she MUST leave the court and may not enter the rest of the game.  He/She must leave the playing venue and will not be able to play again until he/she sees the IM Director.  Any player on the court may attempt the 2 shots and the shooting team gets the ball at mid-court.

Team technical fouls:

  • Illegal substitution
  • Delay of game (team)
  • Request an excess timeout
  • More than five members of a team on the court during play
  • Spectator’s undesirable behavior. (Teams are responsible for their spectators.)

Player technical fouls:

  • Unsportsmanlike conduct
  • Delay of game (player)
  • Refusal to comply with officials requests
  • Grasping either basket during the game
  • Slap or strike either backboard or cause either ring to vibrate while the ball is in flight or in the cylinder above the basket

Flagrant Fouls results in a game ejection and a team foul

  • Fighting or aggressive behavior
  • A hard foul with the intent to injury

Sportsmanship:

If a team receives two (2) or more technical fouls in a single game they cannot receive more than a 2 for that game’s sportsmanship rating. Note:  If the game is stopped by the official, both teams receive a “team technical” and captains must see IM Director the following business day
