LEADING HOLOCAUST EXPERTS VISIT SHU FOR A DAY OF LECTURES AND DISCUSSION

FAIRFIELD, Conn.—Over a dozen of the nation’s leading Holocaust experts will meet at Sacred Heart University’s Cambridge Campus in Trumbull on Monday, January 21, to present a day of workshops for University staff, faculty and students.

Organized in 1995 by Dr. Karen Shawn, an adjunct professor at Yeshiva University, the Consortium of Holocaust Educators is a collection of Catholic, Protestant and Jewish school teachers and representatives from Holocaust resource centers across the country, who meet annually to discuss their ongoing work with colleagues. The meetings are also used to review the current state of Holocaust curriculum in today’s schools.

Monday’s agenda will feature 10 workshops that will explore the Holocaust from literary and historical perspectives. A tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr., will take place first at 9 a.m.

From 9:30 to 10:20, five workshops will be simultaneously in session.

  • Teaching the Holocaust in Catholic Settings: Rationale, Responses, Rewards
  • We Are Children Just the Same: The Boys of the Home Schools of the Terezin Concentration Camp
  • Transmitting Memory in the Post-Holocaust Era
  • Combining Literacies to Enhance Holocaust Narrative
  • Using Testimony to Teach About the Holocaust

From 10:30 to 11:20, five simultaneous workshops will be held.

  • A History of Anti-Semitism: Looking at the Four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John
  • Learning About the Holocaust Through Narrative
  • Israel’s Theory, Design and Practice of Memorialization
  • Daring to Resist: Jewish Defiance in the Holocaust
  • Everything Is Saved in You: The Survivor’s Legacy

"The Holocaust Education Consortium represents the strong conviction that educating for Christian-Jewish understanding must reach deep into the local community, in our schools, our churches and our synagogues -- if all the good that has been accomplished since Nostra Aetate is to forge new traditions of human and spiritual solidarity for our children and for the world," said Dr. Ann Heekin, director of programs and publications for CCJU, who is organizing the day’s events.

Sacred Heart University’s CCJU, College of Arts and Sciences, and the Isabelle Farrington School of Education have partnered with the Consortium of Holocaust Educators and the American Friends of the Ghetto Fighters' Museum to sponsor the workshops.

Attendance is open to SHU faculty, staff and students at no cost, but preregistration is required. Attendees are asked to choose one workshop for each of the two sessions, and add a second and third choice by January 7. Indicate your name, department and position at the University. For more information or to register, please call Dr. Ann Heekin at 203-365-7592.
