The Sacred Heart University Department of Public Safety, in collaboration with Echo Hose Ambulance of Shelton, Conn., will offer a seven-week Medical Response Technician (MRT) course beginning November 3.
The course will run every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through December 15.
“We have several officers who are EMTs, so we know how really good it is to have an underlying medical knowledge to help in security and other fields of that nature,” said Addlie Dennis-Manson, manager of Public Safety at SHU. “A lot of police officers and firemen have a medical background (either MRT or EMT—it’s a very beneficial certification for any first responder. And because it’s rare that you can find an MRT course in this region, we decided to offer one here.”
Dennis-Manson said that the knowledge gained in an MRT course is helpful for many different types of people, not just emergency personnel. “It’s really good for anyone to learn these skills, especially people with children or people who work or live with the elderly, so that they’ll know a little bit of what to do in case of emergencies,” she said.
The course is open to the public and requires advance registration. Enrollment forms (available from the SHU Public Safety Office) and a $300 course fee are due by November 2.
