ABOUT HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
Making a Difference in People's Lives

You can help make the world a better place. Through your involvement in Sacred Heart University's campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity International, you can join hundreds of Sacred Heart University students, faculty and staff who are committed to the Catholic tradition of service to others.

You can also be part of a winning team. As one of only four campus-based chapters in the state, Sacred Heart University's chapter has been recognized for outstanding community service work by the State of Connecticut Department of Higher Education.

Be a Part of History

And you can be part of history in the making. A group of students, faculty and staff members started our Campus Chapter of Habitat for Humanity in Fall 1994. Seeing our commitment and enthusiasm, a board member of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bridgeport  suggested that we apply to become officially recognized as a Campus Chapter of Habitat for Humanity International. This suggestion and the support of the University's Campus Ministry department, led to our application and acceptance as a Campus Chapter of Habitat for Humanity in the Spring of 1995, becoming the first Campus Chapter in Fairfield County.

As a non-profit international Christian housing ministry, the Habitat organization provides the initial capital to build or renovate homes for the inadequately sheltered. Construction is a cooperative effort involving both volunteer workers and the future homeowners. (Answers to many of the commonly-asked questions about Habitat for Humanity can be found on the Habitat FAQ's.

Serving the Greater Bridgeport Community and Beyond

As a member of the Campus Chapter, you will assist the local affiliate in constructing affordable housing, raising funds and increasing awareness of housing issues in the Bridgeport community.  The Campus Chapter works at least five weekends a semester.

While the University community works locally through its Service-Learning, Curtis Week, and Community Connections programs, it also reaches beyond Bridgeport by assisting the Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity chapter in Wilmington, NC every Spring.
