Welcome to the Student Staff Application Process!!!

Thank you for your interest in the Resident Assistant and Apartment Assistant Position at Sacred Heart University.  Please read through the following information as you start your application.  As you continue through the process please do not hesitate to contact the Office of Residential Life at 203-416-3417 if you have any questions. 

If you are currently an RA for the Office of Residential Life and you would like to reapply for next year or apply for a Senior (RA/AA) Position, please expect an e-mail from the central office regarding specific instructions for these processes over the next week or so.
Resident Assistant and Apartment Assistant Application Process
This year we have a new position in the Office of Residential Life.  The apartment assistant position will replace the resident assistant position in the off campus areas of University Housing.  Both the apartment assistant and resident assistant application process will run at the same time.  The steps of the process will be identical for each position with some variation in the questions asked at the individual interview.  Please make sure you check what position you are interested in when filling out the on-line application.  A brief description of each position is posted at the links below.

The Information sessions for the student staff position are listed below.  Please attend one session to review the selection process, minimum requirements to apply, the job description, and the compensation for this position.  If you cannot attend any of the sessions listed below, contact the Office of Residential Life at 203-416-3417.

Requirements
  1. You must have a 2.5 grade point average both cumulatively, and for the semester prior to employment.
  2. You must be a full time undergraduate student at Sacred Heart University.
  3. You must be eligible for campus housing to be a student staff member.  All students are granted four years of undergraduate housing.  As long as you will be within the four allotted years while working as a student staff member, you may be granted a student staff position.
  4. You must not have open/active judicial sanctions with a judicial hearing officer at Sacred Heart University.  You may still apply for a residential life student staff member position if you have been found responsible for something in the past.  However, you may not be on any type of disciplinary probation with any judicial officer at the University at the time of employment.  Your judicial history will be reviewed and your candidacy for employment will be determined by the Office of Residential Life during the selection period.
 
Remuneration
Aside from the priceless leadership experience you will gain from being a student staff member at Sacred Heart University, you will be awarded a base stipend of $3600.00 in the form of a financial aid package.  The actual amount may change based on your appointment for the 2010-2011 academic year.  Actual stipend amounts will be shared prior to the start of your appointment.  In addition, all student staff members receive departmental apparel to be worn during official residential life functions and responsibilities.
Here is a very brief overview of the application process.  For additional information, be sure to attend one of the informational sessions posted above, or contact the Office of Residential Life.
  1. Student Staff On-line Application - Visit the link below to begin your Application.  (DUE FEBRUARY 17, 2010 @ 3:00PM)
  2. Reference Forms - The reference form is available herePlease print out two copies of the reference form and distribute them to two people you would like to recommend you for the student staff position.  Read and complete the top portion of the form prior to distribution. If you do not complete the top portion of the reference, it will be considered incomplete. Please note that one must be a residence hall director, a resident assistant, or a SHU affiliated faculty or staff member.  The other reference should be someone who knows you in a supervisory or advisory role.  Parents and close family members may not fill out the reference forms.  All reference forms must be returned to the Office of Residential Life by Friday March 5, 2010.
  3. Duty Visit - Visit with an RA on duty and do a round in a residential area you may want to work in.  The Duty Visit Worksheet will be available in the staff offices, or you may print it out here, and bring it with you that evening.  If you need help finding an RA to do a round with, please acquire contact information for the RHD of that area here.  Bring this form to Group Process Day on February 27, 2010 - remember to have the staff members you visited with sign the bottom of the form.
  4. Program Idea - Complete the Program Idea Worksheet and bring it with you to Group Process Day on February 27, 2010.
  5. Nuts and Bolts of the student staff member Interview Process - *New this year!!!* The Office of Residential Life will be reviewing some basic expectations for the interview and group process day experience.  We will review sample questions you may be asked at your interview, and review what the group process day experience will include.  Although not mandatory, this meeting will be helpful to you in the process.  (Please select one - Tuesday February 23 or Thursday February 25th, 2010 8:00pm in the Roncalli Hall Lounge)
  6. Group Process Day - Saturday February 27, 2010 9:30am - 3:00pm University Commons.  This is a mandatory portion of the RA application process.  Please dress appropriately (jeans and shirt are acceptable).  You will be partaking in a number of exercises to explore how you work with others in a variety of settings.  Please bring your schedule to Group Process Day - you will be scheduling your individual interview at that time.  In addition, please remember your completed Duty Visit and Programming Idea Worksheets. Without these two worksheets, we will not schedule your individual interview. 
  7. Individual Interviews – Lasting roughly 45 minutes, your individual interview will be with a member of the Office of Residential Life Staff. You will schedule your interview when you come for Group Process Day as noted above. Please remember to bring your schedule with you to Group Process Day.  
  8. Notification Letters - Letters notifying you status as a student staff member will be sent out via e-mail to all applicants by Wednesday March 17, 2010.
