Fr. Edward (Ned) Murphy, S.J., holds graduate degrees in philosophy, theology and classical languages. A native of the Bronx, New York, Fr. Murphy entered the Jesuits in 1955 and was ordained a priest in June of 1968 when he began his advocacy for peace and justice. In 1978, he formalized his work with homeless young men in the Bronx and established a residential community where for the next 20 years, young people could find the experience of “family” that their life circumstances had denied them. In 1978, his work turned to the growing reality of homelessness and hunger in New York City with the founding of a soup kitchen, named POTS (Part of the Solution), operating from a small store front on Fordham Road in the Bronx. At that time, POTS was the 35th emergency food provider in New York City. Twenty-five years later, there are over 170 providers in the Bronx alone. POTS has developed into a multi-service agency including a community dining room, homeless prevention programs and a transitional residency program for men. Over its history, POTS has served more than 2 million meals in addition to legal, medical, social work, and community organizing and advocacy services. Today, on the same block in the Bronx, POTS responds to the myriad of issues that affect crisis in individual lives as a loving community that nourishes the basic needs and hungers of all who come to their door.
