SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER is an exhibition of powerful portraits of human rights defenders from around the world, taken by Eddie Adams, the renowned Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist and recipient of over 500 photography awards. The exhibition began its tour in 2000 at The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and has traveled nationally and internationally to numerous venues.

SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER examines issues of human rights around the world, from nuclear disarmament to children in war, from environmental activism to religious self-determination and sexual slavery. A series of thirty-two, large-scale dramatic, gelatin-silver photographic portraits of Vaclav Havel, Baltasar Garz Lama, Desmond Tutu, Elie Wiesel, among others, form the principal content of the show.

An additional contextual layer is provided through extensive wall labels, composed of text from the interviews of the subjects by Kerry Kennedy.

SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER began with the publication of a book of interviews by Ms. Kennedy, with photographs by Eddie Adams, edited by Nan Richardson (Speak Truth to Power: Human Rights Defenders Who Are Changing Our World, published by Umbrage Editions www.umbragebooks.com)

Women of a Certain Age and Beyond
featuring works by Dotty Attie, Ann Chernow, Louise Bourgeois, Nancy Spero, Selina Trieff
January 27 – February 28, 2008 (Closed President’s day)
Opening Reception: Sunday, January 27, 1:00-3:30 pm
Panel discussion: 3:30pm
Moderator: Sophia Gevas

The five artists in this exhibit have been chosen to present a small sample of distinctive women’s voices in figurative contemporary art. “Women of a certain age” traditionally refers to women over 40 and suggests that true beauty comes with maturity.

Dotty Attie, Louise Bourgeois, Ann Chernow, Nancy Spero and Selina Trieff have each developed an unmistakable personal vision. These women established their careers when few female artists were taken seriously. These Women of a Certain Age and Beyond have used those years productively, developing their craft, honing their skills and earning widespread recognition. Still working, their late-life creativity is undiminished.

The works in this exhibition depict or refer to either women or the female of a species – from the middle class women depicted by Dotty Attie, to the spiders of Louise Bourgeois, to the goddess figures of Nancy Spero, to Ann Chernow’s wanton women of the Film Noir period, to the mysterious, tender figures of Selina Trieff. These are not portraits of specific individuals. These images represent a multiplicity of symbolic females – a mother, a goddess, a seductress, an angel, or an everywoman.
