Applying Sensory Integration Principles For Diverse Populations

Course Overview: This workshop provides an overview of Ayres Sensory Integration® theory, assessment and intervention. Examples will be provided of applications in various populations and age groups such as early intervention, autism, and learning disabilities. Sensory integration principles will also be discussed as relevant to occupational performance across the lifespan. Emphasis will be placed on the use of clinical reasoning when applying the OT/sensory integrative approach during evaluation and intervention with clients. Participants will analyze existing clinical reasoning models focused on Ayres Sensory Integration®, and interpret assessment findings to identify patterns of sensory integrative dysfunction to create a systematic intervention plan. Learning will take place through lecture format and guided discussions of case examples.

AIMS
  • Identify the way in which sensory integration and praxis deficits influence occupational performance across the lifespan.
  • Learn a systematic, occupation-based process for applying a sensory integrative approach within occupational therapy with a variety of clients.
  • Discuss current methods for assessing sensory integration and praxis.
  • Identify occupation-based goals that include sensory concerns and expected outcomes.
  • List effective intervention strategies for varying types of sensory integration deficits.

The Center for Professional Development in Occupational Therapy
The Center for Professional Development in Occupational Therapy is the faculty practice of the Graduate Program in Occupational Therapy.
