A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

April 27, 2007

A faculty committee on Undergraduate Research and Internships (URI) was formed in the Fall of 1999 to develop one of two flagship program initiatives in the College of Arts and Sciences.  The flagship areas (Undergraduate Research/Internships and Writing/Communications Across the Curriculum) were selected in response to the Strategic Plans of both Sacred Heart University and the College of Arts and Sciences.

The URI Committee, comprised of ten faculty members, was established to design a program that includes opportunities for individual students from all A&S disciplines to work with faculty on research projects outside the classroom or for groups of students to work with faculty on research projects either in or out of class.  Although research opportunities have long existed within many of the A&S majors, the goal of the URI Committee is the expansion of such opportunities, for it is our belief that a combination of the theoretical knowledge obtained in the classroom with supervised, hands-on experiences enhances the students’ education and better prepares them to enter top graduate schools or the workplace.

Again this year, funding has been made available through the College of Arts and Sciences to support student research projects.  Students have had the opportunity to apply for funding in three categories to support their supervised research:

  • Grants for research supplies for current projects.
  • Grants to support travel to professional conferences where students have had their posters and/or research results selected for presentation.
  • Grants to support summer research projects at Sacred Heart University

This Eighth Annual College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Research Symposium has been funded through the College of Arts and Sciences.

I extend my congratulations to all the students and their faculty mentors who have made this Undergraduate Research Symposium possible.

I also extend my thanks to Dr. Marlina Slamet and the URI Committee who have organized this important College event.

Sincerely,

Claire J. Paolini, Ph.D.
Dean, College of Arts and Sciences
