Sunshine Kids is a mentoring program that is a collaboration between the Office of Campus Ministry and the Evergreen Network. Sacred Heart Students are matched up with children between the ages of 5-13 who come to us from the Evergreen Network, an organization which works with people who are affected by and/or infected with HIV/ AIDS and their families.
The children from The Evergreen Network come to campus on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons and are met by their big friends. Part of the vision behind Sunshine Kids is to expose the kids to the everyday aspects of college life: eating in a cafeteria, what a residence hall room looks like, hanging out in Hawley Lounge, using computers in the computer lab, etc. Sometimes we take the kids on field trips so that they can experience things that they normally don’t have the opportunity to do.
The Sunshine Kids mentors make a huge difference on the lives of these children. Because of this program, more of the kids from the Evergreen Network have gone on to college and even graduate school. The student leaders for Sunshine Kids for 2010-2011 are Kelly Leather and Amy Montaruli.
