"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed it is the only thing that ever has." ~ Margaret Mead
Here at Sacred Heart University, we believe that what affects one of us, affects us all. We are committed to educating the SHU community on social justice issues and to working for the protection and promotion of human rights, democracy, and national as well as international justice. Every person on the planet is entitled to fundamental human rights. Pope John Paul II said, "If you want peace, work for justice." By tackling issues such as poverty, hunger, and fair trade, even if it is just on a small scale, we become part of the global solution.
Peace By Justice (PB&J) hosts discussions on social justice issues, encourages students to sign petitions, volunteers at the Bridgeport Rescue Mission (a mobile soup kitchen), and attends conferences in the area.
Campus Ministry sponsors the following groups to help bring about peace and justice in the world:
- Sunshine Kids - a mentoring program held on campus each Tuesday and Wednesday and in partnership with a local church on Thursday afternoons
- Heartbeat - a pro-life ministry that works with local groups and tries to attend the March for Life in Washington, D.C. each year
- Knit Wits - a knitting and crocheting group that provides prayer shawls, scarves, hats and mittens to all in need
Additional opportunities to volunteer and work for justice both locally, nationally and internationally are available through the Department of Volunteer Programs and through student groups like Habitat for Humanity.
