A New Era for One of New England’s Premier Catholic Universities
Since its founding in 1963, Sacred Heart University has pursued the goal of becoming a center for higher education that represents the best of the Catholic intellectual tradition. Now in its fifth decade, the University continues on this path, combining a broad liberal arts curriculum with practical, relevant professional training—all grounded in Catholic philosophy and spirit. The decision to embark on the construction of the new Chapel is grounded in both practical and philosophical concerns. Practically speaking, the University’s amazing growth has created a need for a larger, more centrally located Chapel. Philosophically, the new Chapel is both a visible symbol of Sacred Heart’s rich Catholic intellectual tradition and a venue for building on that tradition in the future.
The new Chapel will be a center for interaction, expression, celebration and worship that integrates fully with all elements of campus life—from the sound of its bells ringing the hours to the peaceful sanctuary and outdoor areas designed for contemplation and reflection.
In Dr. Cernera's words, “The new Chapel underscores just how important we believe spirituality is in influencing how students and other members of Sacred Heart’s community learn and interact with others on campus and in the world.”
About the Chapel
- The University Chapel will provide a setting conducive to worship and reflection, as well as a lively, warm space for community celebration.
- The Chapel will be in a central location on campus, on the main corridor between two academic buildings. It is a key feature of the planned Quad.
- The University community will celebrate Mass there on Sundays and during the week.
- In the ecumenical spirit of Sacred Heart University’s Vatican II origins, the Chapel will provide a sanctuary that welcomes people of all faiths.
The new Chapel is designed by Sasaki Associates, a world-class architectural firm that specializes in university projects. The company recently won first prize in the international design competition for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, and its academic portfolio includes major projects at schools such as Harvard University, Boston College, Johns Hopkins, MIT and Trinity College in Hartford.
