Charlotte M. Gradie, Ph.D., Chair of the Department of History, Professor of Latin American History; received her BA, MA and Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut. Dr. Gradie joined the Sacred Heart University faculty in 1990. Teaching Areas: Latin American history Research Interest: Colonial Mexico, Spanish missions to the new world, Spanish history in European and beyond. Publications: The Tepehuan Revolt of 1616: Militarism, Colonialism and Evangelism in Seventeenth-Century Neuva Vizcaya (University of Utah Press, 2000), with Jan Sweets, Haddam, 1870-1930 (Arcadia Publishing, 2005), as well as numerous articles. Dr. Gradie received the Mellon Grant, Sacred Heart University's Research and Creativity Grant, and is a member of the American Historical Society, the New England Council of Latin American Studies; Conference on Latin American History, the American Society of Ethnohistory, the Haddam Historical Society, and Phi Alpha Theta. Prior to coming to Sacred Heart in 1986, he taught at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (King's Point), Fordham University, and Lehman College (CUNY). Teaching Areas: Chinese and Japanese history and culture and the history of the Vietnam War. Research Interest: early 20th century Chinese educational and social history. Publications: Educational Reform in Republican China: The Failure of Educators to Create a Modern Nation (The Edwin Mellen Press, 2005). His current projects include an anthology, Essays on the Civil Service Examination in China, and a monograph, A Study of Huang Yanpei (1878-1965): Educational Leader in the Reform Period, both of which are under contract with The Edwin Mellen Press. Teaching Areas: Colonial and Nineteenth-century American history, Early modern British history. Research Interest: Early modern North Atlantic Maritime history. John B. Roney, PhD. Professor of European History; received a BA from King's College in 1975, an MA from Wheaton College in 1980, and a PhD from the University of Toronto in 1989. Prior to joining the faculty in 1990, Dr. Roney taught at Redeemer University College and Wilfrid Lauier University, Ontario. Teaching Areas: Western European History and Middle Eastern History. Research Interest: Early modern and Modern France and Low Countries (1500-1900), Historiography (Reformation, Calvinism, Catholicism, Romanticism, French Revolutionary Europe, theories and approaches to history) and Religion and Society in Europe. Publications: The Inside of History: Jean Henri Merle d'Aubigné and Romantic Historiography (Greenwood Press, 1996); co-editor/author with Martin I. Paul Siff, PhD. Associate Professor of American History; received a BA from Brooklyn College and a PhD from the University of Rochester. He previously taught at Westminster College in Fulton, MO, and joined the Sacred Heart University faculty in 1969. Teaching Areas: 20th century US social and cultural history, ethnicity, and immigration. Research Interest: US Labor history Dr. Siff was the past president and treasurer of the Association for the Study of Connecticut History, and a past board member of the Fairfield Historical Society. He is currently Associate Editor of Connecticut History. He is a member of the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, and Phi Alpha Theta. Additionally, he is a consulting faculty member at Charter Oak State College.
