The Department of History offers students the opportunity to major [B.A. degree] or minor in history, as well as several multi-disciplinary minors [see European, Global, Latin American Studies minors within history, and Middle Eastern, and Catholic Studies within Philosophy and Religious Studies dept.] .
Five global fields of study are currently taught:
American History: Paul Siff, Ph.D., Associate Professor of History; Jennifer McLaughlin, MA, Instructor
Latin American History: Charlotte Gradie, Ph.D., Department Chair, Professor
Asian History: Thomas Curran, Ph.D., Professor
European History: John B. Roney, Ph.D., Professor
Ancient History: Gregory Viggiano, Ph.D.
To complete the major, students must take courses in all five areas, as well as a course in Historical Methods and Criticism (HI 301) in the Fall of their Junior year, followed in the Spring by IT 299 and Hi 397, then their Senior year Fall write a Senior Thesis (HI 398). Students can seek greater involvement through membership in Phi Alpha Theta, the international history honors society, through the SHU History Club, and through the many distinctive departmental programs.
