His Excellency Jean Asselborn, deputy prime minister and minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration of Luxembourg, will be the featured speaker at Sacred Heart University's annual Leir Lecture. The event, free and open to the general public, will be held Monday, September 18 at 4:00 p.m., in the Pitt Center Board Room on the University's main campus, at 5151 Park Avenue, Fairfield.
In his lecture, Minister Asselborn will explore “U.S. and European Relations: Current Realities and Future Directions.” Following the lecture, there will be an opportunity to meet Minister Asselborn.
Named for the late Henry Leir, a Luxembourg native and friend of Sacred Heart University, the lecture explores subjects of common interest to the people of the United States and the Grand Duchy.
For the past 15 years, SHU has sponsored Luxembourg's only American-accredited MBA program, attracting students from dozens of countries for graduate education in the heart of central Europe.
Jean Asselborn was elected to the Luxembourg Parliament for the first time in 1984. In 1989 he was appointed head of the parliamentary group of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP), and was elected chairman of the party in 1997. From 1999 to 2004, he served as Vice-President of the Luxembourg Parliament.
He was appointed member of the Committee of the Regions of the European Union and served as Vice-President of the European Socialist Party from 2000 to 2004.
In July 2004, following the June 2004 parliamentary elections, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration.
