EVENTS SCHEDULED FOR 9/11 REMEMBRANCE

To commemorate the five year anniversary of 9/11, Sacred Heart University will host a number of events as a way of honoring those who perished during the attacks.

Sunday, September 10, 2006

  • 8:00 PM Mass in University Commons
    Contact: Rev. Jean Ehret, Campus Ministry 

  • After Mass, there will be a procession to the Chapel where the Banner of Hope will be unveiled.  People are encouraged to write prayers and messages on this symbolic banner as a way of honoring and remembering those lost during 9/11. The Chapel will remain open for 36 hours as a room for quiet reflection, meditation and prayer from Sunday evening until after Monday's candlelight vigil.

  • If you lost friends or loved ones on 9/11 and would like their names read at the September 11 Interfaith Service, please email the names to Carol-Anne Dabek at dabekc@sacredheart.edu in Campus Ministry.

  • The College Republicans, Greek Life, and Freshman Hall residents will display a large flag memorial on the Pitt Center Hill following Mass.

Monday, September 11, 2006Raising of the flag on 9-11 Anniversary.

  • 8:30 AM -  Flag raising ceremony and moment of silence at the main campus entrance

  • Chapel remains open all day for quiet reflection, meditation and
    prayer. Stop by and write a message on the Banner of Hope.

  • Library display on 9/11 begins
    Contact: Kim Macomber, Ryan Matura Library

  • 12:00 PM - Interfaith Service in University Commons

  • 2:00 PM - Faculty Panel Discussion -  "5 Years Later: What Have We Learned from 9/11?"
    Location: University Commons
    Coordinator: David Coppola 
    Music Department's Joe Utterback will open the program with his Elegy for 9/11
    Faculty participants: Dr. James Castonguay: Media Studies: post-9/11 media 
    Dr. June-Ann Greeley, Religious Studies: Perspectives on Islam
    Dr. Brian Stiltner, Religious Studies: Just war tradition and terrorism
    Dr. Linda Strong: The effect on public health and emergency preparedness


  • 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM - The Mentor Office's Second Annual House Calls
    Contact: Valerie Wherley, Student Mentoring
    Staff and students from the Student Mentoring Office will visit freshmen residence halls to speak with students and answer questions.
    Candlelight vigil
  • 10:10 pm Candlelight Vigil on the Patio
    Contact: Jane Sanders, Student Life
    Sponsored by the following sororities: Beta Delta Phi, Kappa Phi and Zeta Iota Lambda
