Sacred Heart University has earned a place in The Princeton Review's 2007 edition of The Best Northeastern Colleges. This recognition follows closely on the University's inclusion in the top tier of Master's Colleges in the North by U.S.News & World Report.
“It's gratifying that in addition to U.S. News, The Princeton Review has once again identified us as a top institution in the Northeast,” said Jim Barquinero, SHU's vice president for Enrollment Planning and Student Affairs. “Obviously, endorsements by those outside of our community are testament to our growth and development over the past ten years.”
For this edition, The Princeton Review surveyed 58,000 students at the 222 colleges featured in the book. Students were asked to rate their institutions on a variety of matters from the teaching ability of their professors to the quality of campus food.
SHU participants cited solid departments in business and marketing, psychology, criminal justice and a “great nursing program.” They singled out the University's high-tech learning environment and called the professors “extremely knowledgeable and interested in what they are teaching.” In January, SHU unveiled the John F. Welch College of Business, named for the legendary CEO of General Electric, who is a major benefactor and continuing advisor to the College.
“The greatest strength of our school,” said one respondent, “would be the student-to-teacher ratio. Because the ratio is so close” – an impressive 13:1 – “it allows students to get more one-on-one attention, and it enables them to do better in class.” While Sacred Heart University has grown to become the second-largest Catholic university in New England, it is still a place where students regularly connect one-on-one with distinguished faculty.
Others praised the University's “amazing sports programs,” its core curriculum and its ideal location close to the beach and the city. In 2006, SHU's women's basketball and men's baseball teams won their first ever berths to NCAA tournament play.
The Princeton Review selected The Best Northeastern Colleges for their academic excellence and other features making them attractive to present and potential students.
