Founded in 1963 by the Most Rev. Walter W. Curtis, Bishop of Bridgeport, the University was the first Catholic university in the United States to be led and staffed by lay people. Located between New York City and Boston, the University's main campus is situated in beautiful suburban Fairfield, Connecticut, with branch campuses in Derby, Griswold and Stamford, Connecticut, Dingle Peninsula Gaeltacht, Ireland; and in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The second-largest Catholic university in New England, the University currently has 3,100 full-time undergraduate students, almost 1,000 part-time undergraduate students and over 1,600 graduate students.

Sacred Heart University is first and foremost a community of learning that offers its students - undergraduates, graduates and adults learning on a part-time basis - a wide range of interesting academic programs. The University offers more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs within four colleges: College of Arts and Sciences, College of Education and Health Professions, College of Business and University College.
