Dr. James Castonguay has been with the Department of Communication and Media Studies since 1999. He has been interviewed, quoted or had his research mentioned in media outlets like the New Yorker, Business Week, Broadcasting & Cable, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, U.S. News & World Report, the Boston Herald, the St. Petersburg Times, the Connecticut Post, Editor & Publisher, the Reuters and Xinhau news services, as well as CNN, Fox News, and the BBC. He has published academic articles in American Quarterly, Cinema Journal, Global-e, the Velvet Light Trap, Discourse, the Hitchcock Annual, and Bad Subjects; the anthologies Glamour in a Golden Age: Movie Stars of the 1930s, Hollywood and War: The Film Reader, Rethinking Global Security: Media, Popular Culture, and the “War on Terror,” Nothing That Is: Millennial Cinema and the Blair Witch Controversies, Truth Claims: Representation and Human Rights, and Headline Hollywood: A Century of Film Scandal; and several encyclopedias. He is a recipient of Sacred Heart University's "Final Four" Teaching Award and  In 2010, Dr. Castonguay received the University College faculty award from SHU’s part-time students.

Dr. Castonguay serves on the Board of Directors of the Cooperative Educational Services Foundation, and is the Treasurer of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies, the leading international academic organization devoted to the study of film and media. Dr. Castonguay is a contributing writer to the human rights magazine, Witness, and was on the Communication Studies and Film and Video Studies faculty at the University of Michigan before joining Sacred Heart. He served as the CMS Department Coordinator and Chair for over a decade, and currently is the Director of the CMS graduate programs in corporate communication, public relations, journalism, broadcasting, film and digital media.
