ZETA IOTA LAMBDA SORORITY
Locally Founded: 2003
Colors: Pink, Blue, and White
Flower: White Jasmine
Twelve women came together to form a lasting bond resulting from the tragedy of September 11, 2001 to form Zeta Iota Lambda Sorority. Many of these women were personally affected by the tragedy and, as a result, wanted to form a Greek Life organization that would instill compassion within Greek Life and the University community. The Sisters of Zeta Iota Lambda reach out to handicapped and disabled individuals at Sacred Heart and in the surrounding area, as well as work toward increasing Disability Awareness on campus. The Sisters aim to better the physical handicap accessibility aspects of the campus and work closely with the Learning Center.
This group also aids those with disabilities outside the SHU community through working extensively with the Special Olympics and the Kennedy Center. Zeta Iota Lambda's motto is “A smile to warm, a hand to hold, a friend forever” which reflects their sisterhood as well as their dedication to their cause. This organization was a CT State Nominee for Outstanding Community Service in 2003, and was also recognized by the University for their Service. The Sisters take pride in their extreme devotion to their cause and truly enjoy the community service projects they participate in.
Aside from dedication to their cause, these women are involved in many other aspects of campus life through various clubs, organizations, and service programs. The foundations of leadership and teamwork learned through these ts of SHU help to make the organization successful. Each sister is unique which also helps to keep the organization open-minded and lively. This tight-knit group of women provides a constant support system of love, compassion, trust, understanding, dedication, and best friendship to each other. Whether it's having a girls' night together, hanging out during winter break, or being at a Greek Life event, you can always find them having fun and enjoying the time they spend with one another!
