What is Upward Bound?
- Federally-funded college preparatory program
- Academic and life skills necessary for success in college
- Advisement, counseling and academic support
- Operates September through mid-August, until high school graduation
- Bridge program for high school seniors
What do we do in Upward Bound?
- Academic instruction and tutoring
- Individually tailored workshops
- Saturday workshops twice a month, per academic year
- Summer component consists of six weeks, Monday through Friday
- Cultural enrichment trips and activities
- College visitations
- Financial aid, scholarship and career information
- SAT workshops, to help increase your score
- Stipends awarded based on attendance and performance
Where does the program meet and how do I get there?
- Sacred Heart University campus on Saturdays twice a month during the academic year and for six weeks, Monday through Friday, during summer component
- Free bus transportation provided during the academic year for Saturday workshops. Students are picked up at their respective schools
- During the summer component the bus stop is within a five block radius of the student's home
How can Upward Bound help me?
- If you are motivated and willing to make the commitment, you will achieve better grades
- Prepare for SAT's and improve your SAT score
- Tutoring for difficult subjects
- Providing academic and counseling services
- Workshops on problem solving skills, self-esteem, communication, assertiveness and time management
- Provide information on colleges, financial aid, scholarships and careers
- Field trips and college visitations
- Provide cultural enrichment activities and exposure to possible career majors
- Opportunity to become part of a close-knit group that accepts you for who you are and for who you can become
- Develop and maintain long lasting friendships with peers
- Upward Bound students are 4 times more likely to graduate from college
What are the program's federal guidelines?
- Low Income student and/or First Generation college student
- A high school student in 9th, 10 or 11th grade or a recent 8th grade graduate
- Between 13 and 19 years of age
- Must be in need of Academic Support
- Trips to major cities, such as Boston, Washington D.C., New York City and Philadelphia
- Attending Broadway Plays, horseback riding and bowling
- Academic Competitions
