Salome Brooks, Ed.D., PT, MBA, MA, Clinical Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy, Program Director, Graduate Program in Geriatric Health & Wellness, Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education, Graduate Program in Physical Therapy
Dr. Brooks earned a BS in Physical Therapy from Quinnipiac College, an MBA with a specialization in Heath Care Administration from Sacred Heart University, an MA from Teachers College Columbia University in Motor Control with a concentration in Motor Learning and Education, and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from Southern Connecticut State University. Dr. Brooks received her NDTA Certification in the treatment of the Adult Hemiplegic Traumatic Brain Injured Patient.
Since joining the faculty at Sacred Heart University in 1998, Dr. Brooks has developed courses in both the Physical Therapy and Geriatric Rehabilitation and Wellness Programs and is now the Program Director for the Geriatric Health and Wellness Program in addition to her clinical faculty position in the Physical Therapy Program. In the Geriatric Health and Wellness Program, Dr. Brooks teaches Systems of Health Care Delivery and advises students in the Masters Project. In the entry-level physical therapy program, Dr. Brooks teaches in the areas of Neurological Examination and Treatment, Professional Practice and Contemporary Practice. Dr. Brooks also guest lectures in the Occupational Therapy Masters Program and Master Program in Exercise Science/Nutrition in the areas of motor control techniques and qualitative research methods respectively.
As Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education in the entry-level physical therapy program, Dr. Brooks has established significant clinical education contracts throughout the United States in traditional and non-traditional settings that include the military, rural medicine, elite sports practice and pediatric oncology. In conjunction with the Area Health Education Corporation, Dr. Brooks has conducted a summer day program for local eighth grade students who show an aptitude and interest toward the Biological Sciences and Health Professions.
In 2005 Dr. Brooks received the American Physical Therapy Association National Minority Faculty Scholarship Award for her dissertation research examining levels of professional development. Her writing and research interests are in the areas of geriatrics, healthcare policy, organizational culture/analysis, and the impact of religion on professional practice. Dr. Brooks has authored several publications on the topic of Geriatrics and makes regular presentations in the areas of geriatrics, motor learning and cultural sensitivity in the health professions. Dr. Brooks has been a textbook reviewer for McGraw-Hill in the area of Kinesiology and Human Performance and is a member of the Editorial Board of the American Physical Therapy Association, Geriatrics Section.
Professor Brooks is currently active in the following professional associations: the American Physical Therapy Association, the New York Neuropsychology Group, The Gerontological Society of America, New England Educational Research Organization and the New England Consortium of Academic Coordinators of Clinical Education. She is actively involved in the Cultural Diversity Committee of the APTA Section on Geriatrics.
