Dr. Emery attended the University of Vermont where he completed his professional education in physical therapy with a B.S. degree in 1975, his Master's in Education in 1981 and his doctorate in Educational Administration in 1990. Dr. Emery first practiced physical therapy at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, New Hampshire where he worked as a staff physical therapist, and then advanced to a senior physical therapist, and then a clinical specialist. In 1981, he joined the Arthritis Center at Dartmouth College as a senior research assistant. He moved to Burlington, Vermont in 1982 to the position of Advanced Clinician at the Medical Center Hospital, and then joined the University of Vermont faculty in the Program of Physical Therapy in 1985. He became the program coordinator in 1992, and then left Vermont to become the founding director of the graduate program in physical therapy at Sacred Heart University in 1994.

Dr. Emery is the Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy and Human Movement Science and also serves as Associate Dean for the College of Education and Health Professions.   Dr. Emery’s responsibilities include providing leadership for new program and curriculum development, program review, clinical practice activities, college-wide faculty scholarship development, and student affairs.

Since at Sacred Heart University, Dr. Emery has initiated the faculty physical therapy practice and is now the Clinical Director of the Sacred Heart University Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Center. He became the chairman of the Department of Physical Therapy and Human Movement Science in 1999, which includes graduate programs in physical therapy and geriatric health and wellness, and undergraduate programs in athletic training and exercise science. Dr. Emery is also the director of practice and clinical research for the College of Education and Health Professions within the University. In addition to his administrative duties at the University, he also teaches pathophysiology at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and professional issues, and administration and management in the physical therapy curriculum. Dr. Emery remains active in a part-time clinical practice, focusing on chronic musculoskeletal patient problems and older adults.

Dr. Emery has been professionally active at both the regional and national level in areas of professional education planning and development, accreditation of physical therapy education, and curriculum development. He has served as a member of the Commission on Accreditation for Physical Therapy Education since 1995 and has been the chairman of that organization since 1997. He has served as a program consultant to professional and post-professional education programs in physical therapy across the United States. His scholarship has been in the administrative area of clinical education and curriculum development and the practice area of physical therapy management of arthritis and related musculoskeletal disorders. Dr. Emery also serves as a manuscript reviewer for several professional journals related to physical therapy. In 2001, Dr. Emery received the Pope John XXIII Award for Campus Leadership from Sacred Heart University. Dr. Emery was the 2003 recipient of the Lucy Blair Service Award from the American Physical Therapy Association.
