TWO WEEK ADVANCED COURSES

Course Descriptions - Grades 7,8,9

Grades 7,8,9
Mythbusters - relived      !!! New Course  !!!
This course will follow Adam Savage and Jaime Hyneman from the popular TV show Mythbusters through many of their most popular experiments.  Students will use problem-solving skills and scientific knowledge to determine if the myth is "Busted" or "Confirmed".  Students will also recreate these experiments and see how they can alter the outcome with new and collaborative work in designing experiments.  Some of the myths we will explore are Mentos and Cola, Duct Tape Theories, the "5 Second Rule", talking to plants and more.

Grades 7,8,9
Forensic Science II
This course in forensic science focuses on the activities of the crime lab. The hands-on experiments deal with methods to link suspect, victim, and crime scene. These include activities in document and handwriting analysis, ballistics, serology, anthropology, botany and other analytical procedures. The use of DNA analysis for typing and profiling is investigated. A case study and current events approach will be used extensively.

Grades 7,8,9
Senior Scientist (Chemistry & Physics II)

Further your explorations of chemistry and physics at an advanced level with computer-based lab probes and other analytical instruments.  Design and launch a hydrogen-oxygen fueled micro rocket, work with light-emitting diodes, create an airbag, study the fascinating properties of infrared light glowing substances, produce gorgeous titanium oxides and much more!  All experiments are designed with safety in mind.

Grades 7,8, 9
Oceanography /Marine Biology II

Come investigate the zonation of Long Island Sound. What's it like under the ocean waters? What animals and plants live there? What life is found near the shore? How do they all survive? These questions and others will be answered through hands-on activities. Specimens will be observed in a saltwater tank, set up by the students, to replicate their natural environment. Field trips to the seashore will allow exploration of our sandy beaches, salt marshes, and rocky shores. A sea study cruise will provide a glimpse of the benthic and pelagic areas and the organisms that inhabit them. Specimens will be dissected to learn more about their habits and adaptability to their particular environment.

Grades 7,8,9
Introduction to Anatomy
This new course is NOT for the squeamish. Physiology of animals will be explored from a new perspective.  This course uses and safely teaches the arts & technique of dissection of preserved species to aid in its discussion and education of simple & complex animals, including their internal functional systems & organs.  This is a great "warm-up" course for
those truly interested in the medical or veterinarian  field.

Grades 7,8,9
Young Meteorologists !!! NEW COURSE !!!!
Through hands on activities these young meteorologists will relate the importance of the Earth's water cycle and atmosphere to the Earth's weather.  The formation and types of clouds will be discussed as we create our own mini cloud.  As storm trackers, students will discover the cause of thunder storms and hurricanes, how scientists study them and the importance of being safe during them, constructing weather instruments to collect and analyze data and creating tornadoes and lightening in the lab are just some of the fun activities these weather kids will experience this summer.
