TWO WEEK COURSES
Grades 4,5,6
Junior Chemist (Chemistry & Physics 1)
  !!! New !!!
Welcome to the wonderful world of physical science!  Explore chemistry and physics in a hands-on manner through "discovery" experiments.  Create Slime, Ice cream (edible!), and invisible ink.  Explore rockets, rubber band and air-powered cars, create copper metal from aluminum foil, investigate the Greenhouse Effect and much more!  Students will make and take home a number of great experiments and projects.  All experiments are designed with safety in mind.

Grades 4,5,6
Forensic Science 1   !!! New and Improved !!!
Hands on activities such as fingerprinting, thin layer chromatography of pen inks, microscopy of hair and fibers, document analysis, footprint casting and others.  Class will culminate in a mock crime scene where students will document and investigate "evidence" found by creating a final presentation to defend their findings.

Grades 4,5,6
Ecology/Zoology
Come and enjoy some outdoor fun and discovery!  Become a Naturalist for two weeks.  We will explore and collect plant and insect samples from four different local ecosystems; forest, meadow, stream and marine.  Build a class terrarium, construct a pressed plant and insect collection, and much more.   Lots of hiking fun!  Other exciting field trips include bird watching at the Fairfield Nature Center and a visit to the Beardsley Zoo.

Grades 4,5,6
Gemstones & Geology

This Earth Science course will explore the nature of the materials that compose the Earth's crust.  Laboratory activities will allow the student to determine the physical properties of rocks and minerals.  Students will also study the forces that formed these materials.  Topics to be studied include:  The Earth's interior, plate tectonics, volcanoes, and earthquakes.  Field trips include visits to Sleeping Giant State Park, West Rock State Park, Old Mine Park, Redding Garnet Locality.  These are all easy hikes that will enable students to examine unique geologic features in Connecticut as well as collect rocks and minerals.  The students will also visit the Peabody Museum at Yale University to learn about the geology of Connecticut and view the dinosaur exhibits.

Grades 4,5,6
Robotics

Discover the world of robotics while exploring sensors, and the inner workings of robots. Children will build, test, and take home the OWI Hyper-Line Tracker Robot and the OWI Spider III Robot. Other robotics to be explored will be the Robix RC6TM, K'NexTM and OWITM.

Grades 4,5,6
Oceanography/Marine Biology
Like to get your feet wet?  Join us in exploring four different marine communities along Long Island Sound.  Trips to the seashore will include using scientific equipment to collect water and specimen samples, as well as creating your own marine field guide.  Back at the laboratory we will set up our own saltwater aquariums for observation, learn how to use a microscope and take a look at the many creatures not visible to the naked eye!  We will also venture to the Norwalk Aquarium to add to our observations of marine organisms found in Long Island Sound.

Grades 4,5,6
Young Engineers:  Science & Technology

The young engineers will explore an array of hands-on science and technology activities. They will experiment with simple machine kits, pulleys, wheels and axles. Emphasis is placed on inventing, troubleshooting, problem solving, and observing as their projects spring into action. Balloon Racers, Simple Machines, Invention Bottle Rocket Challenge, Solar Experiments and Simple Circuit Boards are just a few of the fun, fun activities.
