Professor Brooks earned a BS in Physical Therapy from Quinnipiac College, an MBA with a specialization in Heath Care Administration from Sacred Heart University, completed course work at Teachers College Columbia University in Motor Learning and is pursuing an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership at Southern Connecticut State University. Professor Brooks received her NDTA Certification in the treatment of the Adult Hemiplegic Traumatic Brain Injured Patient.
Since joining the faculty at Sacred Heart University in 1998, Professor Brooks has developed courses in the both the Physical Therapy and Geriatric Rehabilitation and Wellness Programs. In the graduate program in Geriatric Rehabilitation, Professor Brooks teaches HS 512: Healthcare Delivery Systems; HS 523: The Aging Process--Physiological, Psychological and Socio-cultural Aspects, and advises students in their “capstone” project/practicum. In the entry-level physical therapy program, Professor Brooks teaches in the areas of Basic Functional Skills, Neurological Examination and Treatment, and Professional Practice.
As Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education in the entry-level physical therapy program, Professor Brooks has established significant clinical education contracts throughout the United States in traditional and non-traditional settings that include the Military and rural medicine areas of practice. She has also developed the Student Mentorship Program that connects each physical therapy student to a clinician practicing in the community during their academic program. In conjunction with the Area Health Education Corporation, Professor Brooks has established a summer day program for local eighth grade students who show an aptitude and interest toward the Biological Sciences and Health Professions.
Her writing and research interests are in the areas of geriatrics, healthcare policy, educational leadership, and organizational culture/analysis. Professor Brooks has several publications on the topic of Geriatrics and makes regular presentations in the areas of geriatrics, motor learning and cultural sensitivity in the health professions. Professor Brooks has been a textbook reviewer for McGraw-Hill in the area of Kinesiology and Human Performance.
Professor Brooks is currently active in the following professional associations: the American Physical Therapy Association, the New York Neuropsychology Group, The Gerontological Society of America and the New England Educational Research Organization. She is actively involved in the Minority Affairs Committee of the Connecticut APTA and the Cultural Diversity Committee of the APTA Section on Geriatrics.
