Roland Junck, a 1995 Master of Business Administration graduate of the John F. Welch College of Business in Luxembourg, has been appointed the chief executive officer of Arcelor Mittal Steel. The appointment followed a $38 billion merger of Arcelor and Mittal Steel. The new company, now the largest steel producer in the world, will have 61 plants in 27 countries and will produce at least three times as much steel as its nearest rival.
A valued advisor on the Sacred Heart University Luxembourg Board of Regents, Mr. Junck had been senior executive vice president of Arcelor, which is headquartered in his native Luxembourg.
A graduate of Zurich Polytechnic, he joined what became Arcelor-Mittal, in 1980. He has also been responsible for specialized operations in Europe, South America and China.
“I am very proud to be taking up the position of CEO at Arcelor Mittal,” stated Mr. Junck in a press release issued by the company. “I have had many happy years working at Arcelor and its predecessor companies. I have also watched with admiration the growth of Mittal Steel which has established itself as one of the most exciting and dynamic companies in the steel industry today,” he continued.
According to SHU President Anthony J. Cernera, Ph.D., “Sacred Heart University's experience in Luxembourg, through its John F. Welch College of Business, has confirmed the wisdom of our investment in global education: our graduates over the past 14 years have come from 30 different countries. They continue to assume positions of responsibility and leadership at companies around the world, and we are delighted by this extraordinary news.”
