SACRED HEART UNIVERSITY’S 17TH ANNUAL PIONEER OPEN RAISED OVER $70,000 FOR STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
A great day of golf for participants in Sacred Heart University's 17th Annual Pioneer Open Golf Tournament translated into bright futures for students who will benefit from over $70,000 that was raised for scholarships. The Tournament took place on Monday, June 12th at the Patterson Club in Fairfield where 116 players were challenged by the scenic, par-71 course.
A bit of excitement infused the day as golfers vied to qualify for a spot in the “JetBlue Challenge,” a million-dollar hole-in-one contest that was held at the end of the day. The four contestants, who qualified by scoring a closest to the pin shot on one of four par-3 holes, were Michael Kinney (Fairfield), Art LeBreck (Trumbull), Jim Gilleran (Fairfield), and Mike Niedermeier (Trumbull).
While there wasn't a million dollar winner, Art LeBreck went home with the JetBlue Challenge Champion trophy—his shot landed only 21 inches away from that million dollar hole. During the tournament, golfers also had a chance to win a new Hummer with a hole-in-one on the 12th hole, sponsored by KARL Chevrolet HUMMER.
Following the tournament, the golfers enjoyed a reception and dinner, where they also had the opportunity to bid on an assortment of sports memorabilia and other gifts in a silent auction. Awards were presented to the day's winners.
The tournament's winning low-gross foursome, Glen Grella (Fairfield), Dave Grella (Fairfield), Tony Hwang (Fairfield), and Mark Brockwell scored 64.
T.J. Lanese (Fairfield), Jim Gilleran, Pete Secrist (Fairfield), and Jim Wendt (Monroe) made up the winning low-net foursome, finishing the day with a score of 49.
The longest drive of the day was hit by Tony Coppola (Norwalk), while Mike Niedermeier (Trumbull) came in closest to the pin on a par-3 at 5 inches.
The Pioneer Open Dinner sponsor was Keating Associates. Official tournament sponsors included E-Lite Technologies, Inc., Lanese Construction, Inc., and Lenovo.
