The Center for Christian-Jewish Understanding (CCJU) of Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, Connecticut, hosted its annual Nostra Aetate Awards Ceremony and Dinner on Wednesday, December 1, 2004, at the Park Avenue Synagogue at 50 East 87th Street in New York City. The evening began with a reception at 6:00 p.m., followed by dinner and the presentation of the awards.
The Nostra Aetate Award is presented each year to individuals and organizations known and respected for their commitment to interreligious dialogue, understanding, and reconciliation. The award is named for the Second Vatican Council's Declaration on the Relationship of the Church to Non-Christian Religions, which was promulgated by the Roman Catholic Church in 1965 and paved the way for unprecedented progress in Jewish-Christian relations over the next forty years.
This year's recipients included: the Knights of Columbus, a fraternal and charitable society of Catholic men on whose behalf Supreme Knight Carl Anderson accepted; the Claims Conference, an organization that works to secure compensation and restitution for survivors of the Holocaust and the heirs of victims, on whose behalf Rabbi Israel Singer, president, accepted; and Mr. Joel Siegel, Entertainment Editor of the ABC network program Good Morning America.
The CCJU recognizes the outstanding commitment of these individuals and organizations promoting understanding, peace and mutual respect between religions.
