Edited by: Rabbi Joseph H. Ehrenkranz and Dr. David L. Coppola
The papers presented at the 1998 Center for Christian-Jewish Understanding's (CCJU) conference held in Auschwitz, Poland, have now been gathered into a book entitled,
Religion and Violence, Religion and Peace, by Sacred Heart University Press. The papers from this conference address the roots of peace in the Torah, the New Testament, and the Qur'an. Additionally, several authors warn in their essays that religions still have the potential to incite wars and, as such, have a grave responsibility to foster a spirituality committed to preserving life and cultures of justice.
This timely work, edited by Rabbi Joseph H. Ehrenkranz and David L. Coppola, Ph.D., reflects the thoughts of notable leaders in interreligious dialogue and peace-making efforts, including papers from three cardinals. Rabbi Ehrenkranz and Anthony J. Cernera, Ph.D., president of Sacred Heart University, were invited to the Vatican to present a copy of the book to Pope John Paul II, who enthusiastically encouraged and congratulated the CCJU for its “scholarly, untiring and important efforts at promoting interreligious understanding and peace.”
This is the third book to be published by the Center for Christian-Jewish Understanding of Sacred Heart University. It follows Toward Greater Understanding, a 1995 festschrift (festival volume of essays) in honor of John Cardinal O'Connor's 75th birthday and 50 years as a priest, and With My Last Breath, memoirs of a Holocaust survivor (1999). Religion and Violence, Religion and Peace is an invaluable resource for clergy, religious educators, teachers and all students of life who dare to envision a world of lasting peace. Rabbi Ehrenkranz said, “My good friend Rabbi Sirat noted well that there is no such thing as a holy war. Only peace is holy. And I believe that there is no peace without religious peace.”
