March 25, 2008
Dear Students,
We would like to welcome you to the Modern Foreign Language Program at Sacred Heart University. If you plan to take either Spanish, French, or Italian, and you have any previous experience in the language (junior high school or high school study, study abroad, experience speaking the language with your family), you will need to take a placement exam and provide specific information to the Modern Foreign Language faculty. If you have no prior experience in the language at all, you may register for a first-semester course.
The placement exam that we use is web based, so you may take it from any computer with an Internet connection. It takes approximately 20-30 minutes. For Freshmen, we advise that you take the exam prior to May 18, 2008. However, it can also be taken at a later date, as long as it is two days before you come to your Freshman Orientation. For upperclassmen, we advise that you take the exam prior to any scheduled appointment with your advisor for course selection.
For your information, we offer courses at all levels in Spanish, French, and Italian, as well as a major in Spanish and minors in French and Italian. We also offer elementary courses in Japanese and Arabic. Chinese courses may be offered in September of 2009.
Instructions about the placement exams are below. If you have any further questions, please contact Dr. Pilar Munday, Coordinator of Spanish (mundayp@sacredheart.edu), or Dr. Claire Marrone, Coordinator of French and Italian (marronec@sacredheart.edu).
Sincerely,
Dr. Pilar Munday Coordinator of Spanish
Dr. Claire Marrone Coordinator of French and Italian
