VALERIE L. CHRISTIAN, MBA, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

Valerie Christian joined Sacred Heart University in 2002, as Director of the MBA Program and Assistant Professor of Management. Since her arrival at Sacred Heart University's John F. Welch College of Business, she has been immersed in improving every aspect of the MBA program: recruiting a qualified student body, student retention, curriculum development, planning, budget development, and marketing of the program itself. She teaches graduate organizational management and marketing courses.
She joined the John F. Welch College of Business at Sacred Heart University after a 20 plus year career in corporate America. Her most recent corporate position was Vice President of Finance and Planning at the Columbia House Company, which was—during her tenure there—a joint venture of Sony Music and Time Warner. Her responsibilities at Columbia House were broad-based, including: direct marketing, strategic planning, financial analysis, sales analysis, new business development, acquisitions/divestitures, market research/market segmentation, database marketing, and budget development. In 1997, she was inducted into the Academy of Women Achievers of the YWCA of the City of New York.
Her decision to make a career transition from the corporate to the educational world was, in large part, an outgrowth of the positive teaching experience she enjoyed as an adjunct faculty member at New York University and the value she places on having an MBA degree.
She is active in academic research that has direct business application, including her recent publication: "Just Tell Me the Rules! Or When Did the Rules Change?" presented at The Eastern Academy of Management, Annual Meeting, Providence, RI, May 2004.
Mrs. Christian holds a bachelor's degree in English from Colgate University and an MBA degree from The Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College. She is an active Tuck alumna, serving as a mentor, a guest speaker, and Class Agent. As a working mother, she is well aware of the challenges and rewards of trying to balance family and career.
