Hal Lustig was a devoted husband of 46 years, father to 3 adult children and grandfather to 3 young children. He died at the age of 71 of cancer on March 24, 2002. Hal served in the Army as recording engineer to the U.S. Army Band, stationed in Washington, DC. Upon entering civilian life, he became a successful businessman who started out with a small audio studio and ended up owning and running one of the largest independent video production facilities in the New York area with a staff of 300 people. He was known by every one of his employees, from the messenger in the mail room to the CEO, as a man who was interested in their lives, and with whom they would receive compassionate attention on personal or professional issues.
Mr. Lustig was the kind of man who loved hearing people's stories, and he enjoyed sharing many of his own. He tolerated much, but never racial or religious prejudice, and from the earliest years of his life, would speak out against any innuendos spoken in his presence. His commitment to promoting the talent and dignity of others eventually led him to serve on the Board of the Center for Christian-Jewish Understanding of Sacred Heart University. He believed with all his heart that the CCJU could make a difference in the lives of people who he believed had been arbitrarily separated by racial and religious preference. Through the Center's work—especially though an annual lecture which his family intends to endow—his memory and respect for others lives on.
