Who We AreThe New England Journal of Entrepreneurship is published twice annually by the John F. Welch College of Business at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut. The objective of the journal is to be an invaluable forum for exchange of scholarly ideas, practices and policies in the field of entrepreneurship and small business management.
Academics and practitioners alike are welcome to submit original articles that advance research in the field of entrepreneurship. We also welcome book reviews and original case studies concerning entrepreneurial or small business management behavior.
The scope of articles in the journal ranges from the theoretical and conceptual to empirical research, with maximum relevance to those who practice entrepreneurship. All submitted manuscripts are double blind refereed. The journal tries to appeal to a broad range of audience so we seek articles that can be understood and appreciated by those outside of the academic world.
Each year, the journal strives to publish a special focus issue such as "Entrepreneurship in a Global Context", "Entrepreneurship and the Digital Age", and "Measurement Issues in Entrepreneurship Research."
The Editorial Review Board includes academics with proven track records representing well-known higher education institutions both within and outside of the United States. They are selected after a careful review of their research and publication credentials.
Nearly 1,100 copies of the Journal are mailed to academics and practitioners from around the world every six months. The subscription base, while modest at present, is growing and reflects the impact the journal has had worldwide.
The Editor in Chief is Dr. Herbert Sherman, Professor of Management at Brooklyn - Long Island University.
History
The New England Journal of Entrepreneurship evolved from an earlier journal, Vanguard, which was established by Dr. Laurence Weinstein in 1989. The purpose of that journal was to encourage business faculty to write research articles on various small business topics and have them published "in house." The Journal was continuously published by the College of Business until 1996 when there was a one-year hiatus.
In 1998, Drs. Weinstein and Annavarjula decided to change the name of the journal and expand its scope to include entrepreneurship. An Editorial Board was established and a rigorous double-blind refereed process was instituted. Calls for articles were made to an international audience via the Internet and various academic membership lists. The response was immediate and enthusiastic. Dr. Jerome Katz, Professor of Entrepreneurship Studies at Washington University in St. Louis, identified the New England Journal of Entrepreneurship as one of the "up and coming" journals in the field. In 2004, Dr. Joshua Shuart helped NEJE to acquire a Library of Congress number and initiated a new "all electronic" submission process for the journal. In 2005, Weinstein transitioned over to Editor Emeritus, and was succeeded by NEJE's first "outside" Editor in Dr. Herbert Sherman, who revamped the journal's Editorial Board. Sherman previously held the post as Creator/Editor of the very successful electronic THE CASE JOURNAL.
The Journal began with a manuscript rejection rate of 50%, and after its first four issues from 1998 to 2000, boasted a rejection rate of nearly 75%.
