Russell Berrie, the founder of the toy company Russ Berrie & Co., died on December 25, 2002, at the age of 69 of heart failure. Mr. Berrie served as the first Chairman of the Center for Christian-Jewish Understanding's Board of Advisors.
In 1963, Russell Berrie was a young toy salesman when he started his own company with nothing more than $500 and a rented garage for storage. By 1970, Russ Berrie & Co. had become a multimillion-dollar toy manufacturer and distributor, and today it remains one of the most successful toy companies in the world.
Mr. Berrie was a lifetime proponent of Christian-Jewish dialogue, and dedicated himself to the furthering of interfaith relations through financial contributions and continual public advocacy. His personal friendship with Rabbi Jack Bemporad led to his chairmanship of the CCJU Board during Rabbi Bemporad's tenure as executive director. Out of Mr. Berrie's involvement with the CCJU was born a friendship with Sacred Heart University, which culminated in his being awarded a Doctor of Laws degree, honoris causa, in 1994 by Dr. Anthony J. Cernera, president of the university. The Center owe owes much to his vision, energy and encouragement.
Mr. Berrie was recognized as one of the 40 most generous Americans in 1998 by Fortune Magazine. His philanthropy through the Russ Berrie Foundation has benefited hospitals, cancer support, religious and cultural institutions and independent awards.
Rabbi Joseph H. Ehrenkranz, executive director of the CCJU, said, “After a decade of helping to shape and chart the positive future of Christian-Jewish relations, we fondly remember Russ as being a strong advocate and personal friend of the Center. He helped to make our mission possible, and we are proud to be a part of his enduring legacy.”
