PRAYER AND LITURGY

Judaism and Christianity are rich in traditions of prayer and liturgy. Individual and communal methods of worship can provide a window of understanding into the religious beliefs and life of the other. Use this space to discuss your experiences and ideas about prayer and liturgy, and to ask the questions you might have about another's.

Question: Please remind me why Catholic call their worship "the mass."  -JZ

Answer: From a time when the Catholic liturgy was celebrated in Latin (before the Second Vatican Council, 1962-1965), worship concluded with "missa est," which charged the participants to go forth to preach, teach and witness the Good News in the world.  -MB
