Brian Stiltner is an Associate Professor of Theology and Religious Studies at Sacred Heart University. Prof. Stiltner received his bachelor of arts in Religious Studies and Classics from John Carroll University, his masters in religion from Yale Divinity School, and his doctorate from Yale University. His dissertation research formed the basis of his first book, Religion and the Common Good: Catholic Contributions to Building Community in a Liberal Society (Rowman and Littlefield, 1999).
Prof. Stiltner’s teaching and research interests include bioethics, human rights, ethics of war and peace, Catholic social ethics, and the role of religion and virtues in American society. He has recently developed courses on “Human Rights,” “Virtue Ethics,” and one that he offers during election years provocatively titled “Jesus for President.” He incorporates service learning in some of his courses, believing it is important for students to be exposed to the needs and strivings of residents of Bridgeport.
Prof. Stiltner's second book was Faith and Force: A Christian Debate about War (Georgetown, 2007), which features spirited debate between himself and his coauthor, David Clough, over topics such as weapons proliferation and humanitarian intervention. Reviews in Religion and Theology said that "Stiltner and Clough have produced what must be one of the pedagogically most useful texts on the Christian deliberation over war." He is currently coediting a book titled Christian-Muslim Dialogue in the United States and Africa, after which he will begin work on a book titled The Social Virtues.
Dr. Stiltner has been a member of the department since 1998 and has been chairperson since 2011. The service activities that is he most passionate about is advising the student-action club Peace By Justice, and participating in activities of the department’s club for majors and minors.
Brian lives in Hamden, Connecticut, with his wife and two children. His interests include reading, soccer, guitar, and the Italian language. He cannot do any of those with any great expertise, but he tries.
