FOUNDER'S DAY AWARDS CEREMONY KICKS OFF UNIVERSITY'S 40TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
FAIRFIELD, Conn., March 19, 2003—Sacred Heart University embarked on a year-long celebration of its 40th Anniversary with a Founder's Day awards ceremony and luncheon for faculty and staff held, Wednesday, March 19, at the William H. Pitt Center on the main campus in Fairfield.
Sacred Heart University's 40th Anniversary theme is “40 Years of Pioneering Excellence.” Among the service award recipients was Dr. Anthony J. Cernera, president, who has led the University through a period of unprecedented growth over the past fifteen years. Dr.Cernera's award was presented by two Iraqi-born Americans, and members of the Sacred Heart University faculty--Dhia A. Habboush, Ph.D., and Ramzi N. Frangul, Ph.D.--“as a sign of our desire for peace and reconciliation in the world.”
In reflecting on the commencement of the University's 40th Anniversary year, Dr.Cernera said: “It wasn't so long ago that we were not much noted or highly regarded. We have come a long way in a short time. I can't help but affirm that this day gives due honor to the memory of a man, Walter W. Curtis, Bishop of Bridgeport, whose initial vision and energy made this great University possible. In the four decades since then, all of us have labored intensely to make his dream a flourishing reality, where students learn and where learning becomes a way of life. And, true to our mission, where students can grow and develop, so that they can lead and serve others, especially those less fortunate. I am honored to have had the privilege to serve Sacred Heart University as president, teacher, and trustee.”
A total of 34 Sacred Heart University Founder's Day service awards were presented to faculty and staff for 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 years of service.
