UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM RECEIVES FOUR-YEAR RENEWAL; ONLY FIVE PROGRAMS FUNDED IN CT

Sacred Heart University's Upward Bound Program has been granted a four-year renewal. Carylanne Rice-Ehalt, Director of the Upward Bound Program, announced the total amount awarded for the 2003-2004 academic year was $274,895.

A federally funded initiative, Upward Bound is targeted at grades 9 to 12. The program's objective is to prepare students for college entrance.

SHU's Upward Bound Program will provide academic enrichment for 50 students from Bridgeport, Conn.-area schools. This year, it was one of only five programs funded throughout the state of Connecticut.

The curriculum includes Saturday workshops twice a month during the academic year, as well as college prep courses for six weeks during the summer. Workshop courses include math, science, English, foreign language, curent events, SAT preparation, writing and computer training.

The Upward Bound Program is in its 14th year of operation at the University.
